A historic 20th-century shrine to Aai Shri Khodiyar Mata, on the banks of the sacred Tataniya Wali Lake — the revered kuldevi of the Gohil Rajputs of Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
Our Story
Shree Khodiyar Mata Mandir stands in the village of Rajpara, on the Bhavnagar–Rajkot highway, beside the tranquil Tataniya Wali Lake. According to tradition, Maharaja Wakhatsinhji Gohil — a devoted follower of the Goddess — first established a humble shrine here in the 18th century; it was later rebuilt into the temple that stands today by Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji of Bhavnagar, with the structure as it is now dated to 1911.
Khodiyar Mata, also known as Khodal or Janbai, is worshipped across Gujarat, Rajasthan and beyond as a warrior folk-goddess who rides a crocodile and carries a trident. She is venerated as the kuldevi (family deity) of the Gohil Rajput dynasty and is believed to protect her devotees from hardship and grant their heartfelt wishes.
The temple grounds, framed by hills and the still waters of the lake, draw pilgrims throughout the year — especially on Sundays, Tuesdays and full-moon (Poonam) nights — for darshan, aarti and the temple's beloved lapsi prasad.
Aai Shri Khodiyar Mata
Legend holds that Khodiyar Mata was born to Mamadiya Gadhvi in Saurashtra and, alongside her seven sisters and brother, was blessed with divine power. Riding her crocodile mount and bearing a trident, she is worshipped as a protector goddess who removes obstacles, cures ailments and safeguards devotees who approach her with a sincere heart — a devotion carried forward for generations at temples such as this one in Rajpara.
